- The Beacon Council Scheme was set up so councils can learn from each other about good ways of working.
- Each year different themes are chosen because they are important in people's lives and help make the quality of life better in all our communities.
- Councils can apply to say that they have done good work in that theme. They have to show that they are providing excellent services.
- Councils who are chosen got about £50,000. They have to share their ideas and the work they have done with people around the country.
- Listen to an introduction about Beacon from Marie-Anne Brown, Beacon Coordinator (mp3, 583kb).
- Dino Powell is on the Beacon Steering Group. He is the co-chair for Greenwich Partnership Board as well as for the Big Partnership Board for London. He also speaks up for people with learning disabilities.

Valuing People
- Valuing People was one of the themes last year. 20 councils applied.
- They had to show that the whole council were involved in making opportunities for people with learning disabilities better and that they were working in partnership with people with learning disabilities and their families.
Who won?
- 4 councils won Beacon awards. They are Greenwich, Norfolk, Rotherham and Wiltshire.
- Wiltshire won the award jointly with Wiltshire People First. These councils will be Beacons until the end of June 2007.
What happens?
- Each council has had an Open Day.
- This is where you could find out about the great work that has been done at each council.
